Another amazing book by Ryan Cahill.He had hopes this would be a "mid-season finale," and it DEFINITELY lived up to that. This was over 1,400 pages of glorious battles, story lines weaving, questions getting answered, and more questions coming about. I laughed, and i cried. Usually, by the time i am almost done a book, especially when it's long or in a series, I'm ready to move on to something new. This was not the case here. I could have read another 1,400 pages of this.My ONLY complaint is a few of the characters names are very, very similar and when you have so many storylines weaving and you're trying to remember who "Dahlen" is or who "Daymon" is, i really had to think about it for a minute. There's also Tarron and Tarmon. After 3 books of these characters, you start to get the hang of it, but that is literally my only complaint about any of the books in the series thus far.I hope everyone enjoys this series as much as i do. I can't wait for all of the books to be done so i can do my first ever reread of a series. I've never liked anything enough to read it twice. This is the third novel in the series - and two novellas also add a great deal of value to the stories and the worldbuilding. "Of War and Ruin" is by far the most ambitious of Cahill's books -- much longer, with commensurate deep understanding of the characters. The characters are especially key to this series (yes, I know, characters are always "key" - but read on... ), since Cahill presents the story through the POV of each of the main characters. So this chapter is all about Calen Bryer and his white dragon, Valerys . The next chapter is about Dayne Ateres and his sister Alina Ateres - the fierce, tattooed blademasters fighting for a free Valtara. (Dayne's backstory is told in the novella, The Exile.) The next chapter might be about one of Calen's dearest friends, Rist, who now (long story here... you have to read!) finds himself allied with the evil empire. And Calen's sister Ella. And the Knights of Achyron. And... and... and....This book is so worth reading - and if you go to ryancahillauthor.com, you can find more about all of the books. Of War and Ruin also includes a really helpful synopsis of the earlier novels and novellas. (Although you may be like me, and just want to read the whole series again, coming to this newest book with refreshed memory.)I was given an ARC copy of the book, but this is most assuredly an unbiased review. Over 430,000 words, and not a single one of them was wasted. Each of the central characters (and at this point, there are many) has their moments to shine, each feels wonderfully distinct (a feat in its own right given the enormous cast), and how these disparate plot lines are slowly being woven back together is nothing short of excellent.The amount of heart-racing content in this book would be enough for the final volume of most series. Multiple storylines run parallel for a huge number of characters that are slowly being brought together either on the white dragon’s side or on the side of the power hungry mage emperor.The clashes & battles between the two sides are written from the perspective of the characters on each side. I like that even the characters on the mage side of the battles are given humor and heartfelt dialogue that shows them to be characters who are likable, even lovable, but misguided by the emperor.The pace of the story tends to be slow at first with much detail and repetitive wording to remind the reader of previous events from the previous two books. By about 500 pages the pace is much faster and becomes more intense and hard to put the book down, a page turner!The human characters as well as the fantastical beasts, like the dragons, are so well developed. They pull you into their journeys & plights, making you want to know how their stories end! Which is a hallmark of a great story!Long but well worth your time! This was my highest anticipated read for the year and I don’t see how anyone can top this. Exponential growth in character development and the plot expansion is just so yummy, it was hard to not ravenously devour this book. The action alone was aggrandized to the point where each chapter was ingrained with such visceral turmoil, I lost count on how many times my jaw literally dropped at every twist and turn. The agility with which Cahill writes is evident with every scene. Of War and Ruin could very well be my favorite in the series so far (The Fall currently ties for first). Appreciation for the pickup on history from The Fall and giving us more scenes with characters from that time as well as some new ones I’ve come to love cannot be expressed enough. Each plot felt so complete even though there’s still a hundred questions raging through my head.There’s a lot of really good dragon books out there but very few great ones. This is a great one. How one person can keep so much story in their head and then write it all down is a mystery to me, but this is a fine example of pure talent. It will come as a shock to absolutely no one that this is yet another 5-star read from Cahill for me.
