So, I just read this book and I have to say, I barely made it. This book had my stomach turning so severely I nearly vomited on the bed. It is raw, visceral, and truly the stuff of nightmares.The main character, Andi, longs to know what the vultures know. What does carrion taste like? What freedom do these birds have when they consume it? Her latest therapist, Dr. Fawning is of no real help. She mostly sits quietly and stares at Andi with her big brown eyes and funny tan suits, only occasionally whispering comments.Andi clearly suffers from delusional disorders and perhaps a touch of paraphrenia. When her girlfriend, Luna, turns up missing, her false sense of reality comes crashing down.If you have a strong stomach, and perhaps a touch of crazy in you as well, give it a try and let me know what you think. Andi was working as a bartender when she met the love of her life or rather, her pressing obsession, Luna. She would give anything to have Luna to fill the void inside of her. Full of rage and despair at being orphaned, Andi had few lifelines to cling to.But Luna thinks Andi’s fixations on lunar moths and morbidity is weird. Luna rejects Andi’s gift of wings made from Lunar moths and crushes Andi.Left alone, Andi looks to the vultures that circle her property for the secret meaning and nourishment in death.What would it be like to eat carrion? What would it be like to take nourishment from people to hold that piece of them inside of your forever? Andi has to know.Thoughts: The Luna moths! It made me think of Frederick from The Collector by John Fowles and of course, Thomas Harris’s Buffalo Bill from the Silence of the Lambs. The theme of transformation and desiring freedom from all of the rage and despair echoes throughout the book.Obsession is the main driving conflict. Andi is obsessed with Luna from the first page. It’s fascinating to see how the concept of devotion is easily twisted to creepy obsession. How quickly one’s desires overwhelm the wants and needs of the other. Tantlinger’s debut novella is a feverish ride!Gorey, engaging, and might make some people squeamish. I definitely recommend giving it a read! ePUB To Be Devoured pdf online Sara Tantlinger’s first novella, To Be Devoured, is quite a ride; in fact, it was one I didn’t want to get off, reading cover to cover, immediately hooked by the imagery on the first page. The reader quickly knows they are in for a psychologically horrifying journey thanks to the way Tantlinger uses a first person point of view to capture the dark and deep, swirling thoughts of her protagonist, Andi.Tantlinger’s poetry-heart is put to good use within her prose from her beautiful, reoccurring image of a “brain already riddled with tombstones,” to the abject horror of a narrator who has a “twitching, starving” need that can only be sated in one horrific way. Tantlinger also puts her ability to capture images to use in more subtle ways, including within her many sharp descriptions of winter life. Tantlinger writes, “Hot air blows from the car vents, warming my fingers on the still-cold steering wheel. Outside the windshield, beyond the reflection of my cloudy face, the vultures mark the gray sky like a connect-the-dots game. A shudder dances through my spine as the car moves beneath the circling scavengers.” Is it a shiver from the cold, or a shiver from the protagonist’s awakening connection with the vultures? Tantlinger’s prose keeps the reader asking many of these subtle questions as the story unfolds, deepening their uneasy connection with Andi.And what can be said about the vultures? Metaphorically appealing, sure, but the connection between Andi and the carrion-mashing birds is intriguing. Tantlinger doesn’t overemphasize the reference to these harbingers of death, rather she builds it to a frenzy that successfully scares the hell out of the reader.It’s been awhile since I made sure a book was tucked away before I went to bed, but this is one of those works—no one will want to wake up the wrath of the main character, so let’s hope she stays secure where I buried her before I pick up this book again, because believe me, one read will not be enough.
