This book was well written but I guess I just found ALL of the characters so unlikeable that this book was unsatisfying. It combined immense whimsy with morbid comedy. How the heck am I supposed to resist that? This is like a sky full of colorful balloons all bursting at once only to find a sky raining blood on a gala full of ultra rich people dressed all in white and dripping in diamonds. That’s whimsical, morbid, and funny as heck. I’d pay to watch that.Victoria has that rare and precious jewel a lot of people covet: a wild and active imagination. It’s too bad everyone in her life not only hates her tendency to daydream, but also to bury her nose in a book at every available opportunity (same girl, same). Her parents wanted her to be a lawyer and have never stopped belittling her or causing her to feel like she’s a disappointment to them. Her husband won’t allow physical books in the house because he feels they cause clutter, hates her bringing home books from the library, and doesn’t like hearing or seeing her react to the books she reads. And her best friend would rather shop and browse dating apps. But books have been with Victoria since she was a small child, and she’s not letting go of them now.Whimsical, isolated, bored Victoria finds a possible answer to her prayers for an escape from the entropy of her life when she spies a handsome, working-class man reading the same book club-type book at her usual cafe one day. She sees it as a sign they’re meant to be together, and she aims to reach that goal. Sure, her husband will have to go, but that can’t be too hard, surely?So much of what follows in this book are sparkling passages of differing types: dark, morbid, funny, and detailed scenarios in which Eric dies in various ways; Victoria’s vivid imagination creating backstories for the people she sees as she sits in the cafe, the narrator’s whimsical and erotic writing during the astral projection scenes, and the placid, Suzie Homemaker scenes later in the book when Victoria decides to take up baking in a fit of small rebellion.Is this book perfect? Victoria daydreams constantly and likes to imagine the lives of the people around her. She is unhappily married to Eric and also likes to day dream about his demise so she can escape her marriage. She also starts to daydream about a cute fellow reader that she has met at a coffee shop As she starts to feel more and more trapped in her marriage, her daydreams start to blend with reality. Will Victoria get her happily ever after?Bookworm is a tale of an unreliable narrator where it’s hard to tell at times what is real and what is imagined. It reminded me of a blend of You by Caroline Kepnes and My Cousin Rachel by Daphne Du Maurier. I finished the book on Saturday and I am still pondering about the ending and what really happened.I loved all of the literary references in the novel. She talked about a lot of different books including Patricia Highsmith. This seemed like a Patricia Highsmith novel combined with something else such as the short story of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty by James Thurber. My favorite English teacher just passed away yesterday and she loved James Thurber which had me thinking about Walter Mitty and how he daydreamed his life away. Victoria is a modern day Walter Mitty, but her daydreams take a darker turn and she is not usually the star.I didn’t really like the character of Victoria at all, but I did think the story was unique and interesting. His first wife left him for her trainer. On the rebound, Victoria snatched him up. After all, she does have a comfortable life. Eric loves TV, and Victoria loves to read. While Eric is watching his shows, Victoria reads her latest novel. Their social life mostly consists of monthly dinners with the parents. Victoria is bored.So when she spots a very handsome man at her local cafe, she is smitten. Obsessed. Willing to go to great lengths to imagine Eric’s demise and her finding a relationship with this unknown male. Her very imaginative brain comes up with all sorts of ways for Eric to come to his end. Not that she’d ever consider actually putting any of these ideas into play.This is a darkly humorous novel about not being happy with what you have and always wanting what you don’t. Victoria doesn’t have a lot of cause for unhappiness, but when she sees some new shiny thing, she’s tired of the man she has. It’s an entertaining book and an easy read. Victoria isn’t very likable as a character or a person, but then neither is her husband Eric. Neither of them has a lot of redeeming qualities. Yet, I did enjoy the read.
